Whale Watching
A Dream Come True
One of the most thrilling experiences for kids in Iceland is embarking on a whale-watching tour. Picture this: the sun reflecting off turquoise waters, the fresh ocean breeze, and the chance to spot breathtaking whales. Families can experience the pure joy of watching a humpback whale leap dramatically from the water, offering a sight that is both majestic and thrilling.
Tours are available from Reykjavik, with options to cater to different preferences. For example, larger boats can accommodate families seeking a stable experience while enjoying the view. Alternatively, small zodiac boats provide a thrilling, close-up adventure. Families can choose between half-day tours or up to three-hour excursions based on their kids’ attention spans.
We traveled with 2 toddlers and admittedly we were a bit apprentice about a whale watch. Our kids love animals and fish, so we know they’d find it thrilling to see whales in their natural habitat. However, whale watches can be long endeavors and require some patience. Luckily, the larger whale-watching boats have a heated indoor area for kids to hang out while waiting for the elusive whales to appear. We were actually able to see some whales right from the comfort of inside the heated cabin.
We recommend bringing along small activities to keep them occupied. The company we chose had coloring pages and colored pencils for kids so our 2 and 4-year-old had a blast sitting at the indoor tables coloring between whale sightings.
Children are required to wear a Coast Guard-approved life vest, and these are provided for you on the boats at the lower level.
Tours often include knowledgeable guides who share engaging facts about marine life. For instance, did you know that humpback whales can grow up to 50 feet long? Kids can ask questions and learn about various species, including the unique characteristics of orcas and playful dolphins in their natural habitat.
Such interactive experiences promote education and excitement, allowing children to connect with nature. Parents can relish the pride of sharing these awe-inspiring moments with their children.

Amphibian Boat Tours
Land and Sea Adventure
Kids will delight at the chance of an amphibian boat tour. These exciting tours allow families to explore Iceland’s beautiful landscapes from both land and water.
We did an Amphibian Boat Tour on Jökulsárlón, which is the glacial lake at the foot of the largest glacier in Europe (Vatnajökull). The boat started on land and traversed into the icy waters where we explored the floating icebergs and learned more about the lake. Everyone gets a life vest, children included, and the boat goes slow enough for even little ones to stand up and admire their surroundings.
The staff were great with the kids and even brought them ice chunks from the lake to play with.
At certain times of year, kids will also have the chance to spot seals sunbathing by the lake, which is great for animal lovers.
And if your kids are older (10 +) they’ll enjoy a zodiac tour of the lake, which is a smaller inflatable boat that goes a bit faster and closer to the icebergs.

Geothermal Pools
Splashing Fun
No trip to Iceland is complete without splashing around in its famous geothermal pools. Warm, inviting waters create a wonderful atmosphere for families to relax while surrounded by breathtaking mountain views.
Children will love the opportunity to explore the warm waters, discover small geothermal features like bubbling mud pots, and even make new friends. Many pools provide family amenities, including snack bars and changing facilities.

The Blue Lagoon is the most famous geothermal pool in Iceland, offers free entry to those under 13, and provides flotation vests (required) for children under 8.
These naturally heated pools are perfect for kids to play, float, and enjoy the experience. The Blue Lagoon may be the most famous of these spots, but it can get crowded. Families looking for a quieter alternative can check out areas like the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir, which offers a beautiful natural setting. And if you're feeling a bit more adventurous, you can hike to Reykjadalur Hot Springs, located near the town of Hveragerði.
Spending time in a geothermal pool is not only fun, but it also introduces kids to the science of geothermal energy and why these pools are naturally heated due to Iceland’s unique geological activity.
It’s important to note that geothermal pools are not recommended for children under 2 as they have a harder time regulating body temperature. You should take care to limit children’s time in increased temperatures.

Snorkeling in Silfra
An Underwater Wonderland
For children over 12 years, who are at least 150 cm (about 55 inches) tall and 45 kg (about 99 lbs), snorkeling in Silfra fissure offers a unique opportunity to traverse between tectonic plates.
For families wanting an extraordinary experience, snorkeling in Silfra is unmissable. Located in Thingvellir National Park, this unique opportunity lets you swim between two tectonic plates—the North American and Eurasian plates.
With some of the best visibility in the world, the crystal-clear waters here provide visibility that can exceed 100 meters, showcasing stunning underwater features.
Children have the chance to see colorful aquatic life and breathtaking rock formations. The excitement of floating in such a magical setting is absolutely unforgettable.

Parents need not worry if their kids are new to snorkeling. Many tour operators provide thorough safety briefings and equipment, ensuring a comfortable experience for all. Children will feel a sense of wonder as they explore this beautiful underwater world up close.
Although we have not done this activity with our kids, we did snorkel here back in 2017, and it was a truly extraordinary experience that we recommend to all. We can't wait until our kids are old enough to experience it themselves.
Exploring Ice Caves

For those seeking fantastical adventures, a tour of Iceland's stunning ice caves is a must. Formed within massive glaciers, these ice caves are like stepping into another world—one filled with shimmering blue ice that captivates and thrills.
Walking through an ice cave can feel like being in a giant icebox. Kids will be mesmerized by the stunning translucent blue ice reflected by light.
Family-friendly tours ensure safety and hands-on engagement. Guides provide fascinating stories about how these caves were formed and the science of glaciers, making it both an adventure and an educational experience. Children can even pretend to be real explorers as they navigate through these ancient formations.
Keep in mind that most ice cave tours have a minimum age of 6-10 years old. Although these tours are generally safe, the terrain can be slippery, uneven, and difficult to navigate for children. Additionally, many tours involve walking long distances.

Famous ice cave tours include Katla Ice Cave and Crystal Blue Ice Cave tours in Vatnajökull national park. Katla Ice Cave tours are available year-round, while the ice cave tours at Vatnajökull are available only in the summer months.
On our trip, we did the Katla Ice Cave Tour through Troll Expeditions. Our kids are too young for this one, however, we were each able to do the tour solo and we highly recommend it. The tour is well-organized, informative, and most of all beautiful.
An alternative for all ages would be the Into the Glacier tour, which takes visitors into the heart of Langjokull Glacier, where you can find the World's largest ice tunnel.
On the company's classic tour, there is no age minimum, and they advertise an easy 1-hour walk inside the glacier. They do, however, recommend that infants remain in a baby carrier for the tour.

Horseback Riding
A Unique Way to Explore
For many families, horse riding in Iceland is a highlight of the trip. The Icelandic horse is known for its friendly nature and unique gaits, making it suitable for riders of all ages.

One of the thrilling adventures for kids is taking a boat tour to spot puffins. These charming birds, known for their bright orange beaks and entertaining antics, are sure to capture the hearts of children.
Puffins typically visit Iceland between April and August, making summer the prime season for delightful sightings. Families can embark on tours from various locations, which guide them to the best puffin-watching spots while sharing fun facts about these fascinating birds.
